Launched in 2023, the Anouvong is a small, luxury cruise boat with ten lovely staterooms and suites blending Laotian artwork with French-Colonial finesse. The boutique cruise offers an immersive way to explore and absorb the beauty of Laos' upper Mekong at a slow pace, meandering along the river through remote areas of Laos. Heritage Line, who operate the boat, have a long track record of expeditionary cruises on the lower Mekong.
The journey begins at Huay Xai on the Thai border meandering down the river to Luang Prabang over three days. Longer cruises continue down to the capital Vientiane with two itineraries covering either 7 or 9 days (including the Huay Xai to Luang Prabang section). The cruise also operates in reverse.
Whilst on board, a range of activities are included. You can leave the boat for activities such as kayaking and rural village tours or stay on board and watch local musical performances or presentations by experts. Alternatively, switch off at the spa or with a morning Tai Chi class. All meals are included, ranging from al a carte dining to riverside barbecues and al fresco aperitifs.
Deluxe - This is our first really 'upmarket' category. It might be a beautiful tiny hotel with very limited facilities or a 5* resort hotel with all the trimmings; but any hotel in this category will be a well-run establishment with very comfortable rooms, a strong service ethos and excellent food.
