The Birdlife of Sri Lanka
A remarkable journey through the eclectic terrain and natural habitats of Sri Lanka in search of some of the 500 endemic and migratory bird species that have been recorded here.
Located on a private peninsula on the banks of the historic Diyawanna Lake, Aathma is a colourful and quirky boutique hotel in a surprising location in Greater Colombo.
Once a family home, Aathma has now been converted to a 10-room hotel. The vibrant colours and eclectic styles of the interior are truly unique, and much of the furniture and décor has been sourced from local artists and craftspeople. Rooms vary in size and style, with some providing direct access to the garden or roof terrace and some with views of the lake.
One appeal of the hotel is the amount of accessible nature surrounding it: a rarity for a city hotel. The lush tropical garden is full of fruits and flowers and is also frequented by monkeys, parrots, kingfishers, and other exotic bird species. Guests can take boat trips on the lake to spot other aquatic wildlife or just to enjoy the tranquil setting. For keen birdwatchers, the Beddagan Wetland Park is just a short drive away. Here, visitors can choose from various trails and expect to see many waders and water birds, as well as species such as Red-Ringed Parakeets, Orienta Magpie-Robins, and Red-Vented Bulbuls, among others.
Aathma is a good choice for visitors looking for something a little different with a homely feel, and who like the idea of being surrounded by nature despite being in a busy city setting.
Superior - This is what we would describe as our standard category. These will be decent 3/4* hotels providing a really good level of service. We would generally expect them to be providing a little something extra, in terms of character, guest experience or facilities too.
