Nizwa is a fascinating historic town at the foot of the Al Hajar Mountains, located around two hours from Muscat. The main attraction is Nizwa Fort, dating back to the 17th century and surrounded by a labyrinth of souqs. It’s great to visit on a Friday when the locals come to town, and the livestock souq is in full swing, but it’s worth exploring any day of the week.

It’s possible to stay in a hotel in or near Nizwa itself and explore the surrounding mountain villages, canyons, wadis and other historic sights like Bahla Fort. Alternatively, Nizwa can be visited on a day trip from Muscat or incorporated into a road trip to Jabal Akhdar or Jebel Shams in the mountains, where you could stay in a fantastic retreat like the Alila or Anantara.
