This region has excellent wildlife and is a brilliant place to spot many endemic and endangered species in their natural setting. Abai Jungle Lodge is only accessible by boat and is just over an hour along the Kinabatangan River from either Sandakan or Sukau village.
The riverside location, boat safaris on the river, and the extensive boardwalks reaching into the jungle interior make this an easy place to explore. So, its a great location for wildlife enthusiasts, or even those who want to immerse themselves in the wilds of Borneo in a short space of time.
The accommodation here is simple, with 24 basic but large and clean wooden chalets built on stilts along the river. Rooms have mosquito nets and fans. Abai Jungle Lodge has an open-air restaurant where tasty meals can be enjoyed on the jungle boardwalks and there is also a lovely sundeck built beside the river.
Although simple, this is an excellent spot for experiencing the tranquillity and wilderness of the lower Kinabatangan River and is a unique place that is well worth a visit. The orangutan, bearded pig, owl and troop of macaques that frequent the lodge grounds are sure to make your stay here special.
