The Plains of Bengal
Explore the heritage of Bengal on this fascinating adventure, ideal for India second-timers or those looking for something different.
The Garden Bungalow is a heritage property set in a 3-acre exotic garden in the famed university town of Santiniketan founded by father of renowned Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore. It took ten years to develop the building to ensure the aesthetics of the area were incorporated sensitively throughout. Each of the four suites that ETG recommend open up to a verandah from which you can enjoy the peaceful and relaxing setting; a tour of the gardens with the naturalist can be arranged too.
Throughout the property, including in the rooms, you’ll find sculptures and antiques from all over Bengal and insights into the legacy of Tagore.
The four suites can get booked up very early and as it is the only property that ETG recommends in the area, it is important to book early. The service isn’t particularly formal, however, this is a unique and ambient place from which to experience the heritage and history of Santiniketan.
Comfort - This is our lead in category. There will generally be a no frills approach and while some will be characterful, some will do exactly what it says on the tin - provide a clean, comfortable and good value place to spend the night. These places are normally 3* hotels.
