Explore the Mysteries of Borobudur Temple

Take in the magic and magnificence of this vast 9th-century Buddhist temple, which we believe is a strong contender for the eighth wonder of the world.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Borobudur is the world’s largest Buddhist temple and is incredibly well-preserved. It’s an absolute must-see if you’re a culturally-curious traveller.

Built between 750–850 AD by the Sailendra dynasty, this vast temple complex sits on a forested plateau surrounded by dramatic volcanic peaks — including the highly active Gunung Merapi.

The temple was constructed using over two million individual stones, wrapped around a small hill. The result is a striking structure with six square terraces that rise to three circular ones at the top. The lower terraces are covered in delicately sculpted reliefs depicting scenes from the life of Buddha and core Buddhist beliefs like karma and reincarnation. The upper terraces are dotted with 72 stone stupas, each with holes in their casing, giving you a glimpse of a Buddha statue hidden inside.

Not long after it was completed, the spread of Islam in Java pushed Buddhist communities eastwards. Then, in 1006, Gunung Merapi erupted with full force, burying the temple in ash. It was forgotten for centuries — untouched until its rediscovery in the early 19th century.

Following a long and costly restoration, Borobudur has been returned to its former glory. With its intricate carvings, vast scale and extraordinary natural setting, it easily rivals Angkor Wat in Cambodia as one of the greatest ancient structures in Southeast Asia.

The best time to view it is at sunrise. Climb to the top of a nearby hill (we’ll keep the exact spot a secret!) and watch as the sun slowly lights up the temple, the volcanoes, and the tree canopies below, often still cloaked in morning mist.

While the main attraction is undoubtedly the temple itself, the light and atmosphere at this hour make the whole experience even more magical. And if you’re there in July or August, you’re in for a real treat — the sun rises directly between two volcanic peaks that dominate the eastern horizon, adding an extra touch of drama to an already unforgettable scene.
