Remote rivers, hill tribes, and mountain trails

Located in remote northwestern Laos, Luang Namtha, Bokeo and Oudomxay Provinces are beautiful destinations with spectacular mountainous scenery, limestone karts, ethnic villages and picturesque river valleys.

These provinces have a low population density and are bordered by China, Myanmar and Thailand. Up to 39 different ethnic minority groups are said to live here, and the isolation of this area has meant that the culture and traditions of the distinct ethnic groups have been well preserved. Mountain biking, hill-tribe and village visits, kayaking or rafting and beautiful mountain treks are all offered to visitors of this remote region of Laos.

Take a slow boat like The Luang Say Cruise from Huay Xai (at the Thai border) down to Luang Prabang or stay at the terrific Muang La Lodge. Explore the countryside around Nong Khiaw and if you’re really up for an adventure, consider the overland route east to Vietnam through Hua Phan province. En route, you’ll pass the Vieng Xai caves where Laos’s communist leaders lived during the Vietnam War, and you could even stop and explore the jungle of Nam Et National Park.

With overnight river cruises and some adventure and ecotourism initiatives in the province, there are a number of fantastic activities, excursions and places to stay here.
