Exploring Punakha Dzong

Punakha Dzong, dramatically set at the confluence of the Mo Chhu and Pho Chhu rivers and framed by blooming jacaranda trees, is often considered Bhutan’s most beautiful dzong.

Built in the 17th century by the 1st Rinpoche, it holds great historical and cultural significance: every Bhutanese king has been crowned here, and it was also the setting for the current King’s wedding in 2011.

With your guide, you’ll cross the picturesque Bazam bridge, following the gentle procession of red-robed monks as you approach this grand fortress. Inside, explore its three courtyards, each with a distinct purpose: administrative offices, monastic quarters, and the temple area.

A highlight of the visit is the famed ‘hundred-pillar’ assembly hall – despite its name, it contains 54 pillars, yet remains an impressive space adorned with exquisite detail. Throughout the dzong, you’ll encounter elaborate murals depicting the life of Buddha and gaze upon magnificent gold statues of Buddha, Guru Rinpoche, and the Zhabdrung, each radiating spiritual presence and artistry.
