The Oberoi Grand (the Grande Dame of Chowringhee) is more than 100 years old.
It carries with it a certain sense of pride, having hosted national and international leaders in its impressive suites since its Colonial heyday. It was recently refurbished with modern luxury fittings, but still has a 90’s feel to it. Despite this, it’s a comfortable and high-quality experience.
If you want sleek and modern, you might find it a bit dated, but it’s a terrific and comfortable home away from home in central Calcutta.
Calcutta is certainly vibrant but often overwhelming, and the Oberoi Grand is a grand and peaceful retreat. It’s within walking distance from the sprawling park at Maidan, Fort William, Victoria Memorial, and the Indian Museum.
At the hotel, there are a couple of great restaurants and of course the renowned Chowringhee Bar, which is quirky and pleasant with live jazz musicians and comical caricatures on the wall. The pool and courtyard is a peaceful inner sanctum, and a great way to get away from the immense hustle and bustle of Calcutta.
The Rooms
The rooms and suites have spectacular views of the bustling market on one side and tranquil gardens on the other. All feature luxury bathrooms, modern facilities, and Colonial furnishings. The premier room with a balcony is an excellent choice for extra space and elegance.
