Bonjeruk Community Village
‘A Day in the Life of Bonjeruk’ is a brilliant community-led experience in a little-known corner of Lombok.
The morning begins when you meet one of the local women who guide the tours, who’ll accompany you on a two-hour walk around the village. Along the way, you’ll see traditional weaving, cooking and daily life as it’s been for generations.
You’ll then stroll through the paddy fields to an open-air lunch spot, where you’ll help prepare satay before tucking in. After lunch, there’s the option to hop on a bike for a scenic ride through the surrounding countryside — a great way to take it all in.
Many “village tours” in Indonesia are quite touristy, but the local people of Bonjeruk have set up this project with a clear goal and sustainability in mind.
They only allow two sets of visitors a day, and the project’s purpose is to help improve the welfare and economy of the rural village and to support and empower the local women, as many of the local men work away from home for long periods.
A trip to Bonjeruk is a fun and authentic way to experience life in Lombok that supports a community, and helps preserve rural lifestyle and traditions.
