The region shares a border with China and is often overlooked in favour of the nearby Sapa region. However, unlike Sapa, which has seen an incredible amount of tourist development in recent years, Ha Giang provides a more authentic experience. The majority of the population are ethnic minorities, and it’s a great spot for the curious traveller wanting an off-the-beaten-track experience.
Ha Giang town is the capital, though the town of Dong Van is a great option to base yourself if you’re looking to do some trekking. We can recommend homestays or small guesthouses here that provide a simple and comfortable place to stay. Even smaller is the town of Meo Vac where you can simply watch local life go by around the town square. It’s best to visit these towns on a Sunday as they play host to colourful weekly markets with locals selling their goods.
The best way to soak in the magnificent scenery is on a three or four-day trek, stopping through minority villages, wandering along rocky mountainsides and through pristine farmland. It’s also home to a popular motorbike route – a great, adventurous way to see the area at your own pace. Many trips to Vietnam whizz from north to south, ticking off the main sites along the way, but there is much to see in the north alone. The scenery is lush, varied and breathtaking, and there are plenty of wonderful places to stay. Vietnam has an extensive network of domestic flights, so it’s tempting to fly around all over the place and pack loads in. But travelling a little more slowly by train can be hugely rewarding and fun! This holiday includes an overnight journey and two-day trains as you traverse the country from Hanoi to the Central Coast. You’ll stay in some great spots along the way including a luxury beach resort in an idyllic location.
This trip suggestion works particularly well for families travelling in Spring and Summer since this is the best time to visit Phong Nha Caves and the Central Coast. It avoids the southern part of the country, where the weather is less favourable in the summer months.
