FAQs about Hotels in India

If you like a bit of grandeur with your getaway, absolutely. And if you’re used to luxury international hotels, these properties are your best bet. These are a great way to experience complete comfort while also getting a glimpse of local design, food and meeting local people. All over the country, you’ll find former palaces and forts that their owners converted into fantastic luxury or quirky hotels.

If you are the type of traveller seeking authenticity and value then Indian homestays are definitely the way to go. Run by local families, they’re typically humble but comfortable with warm, heartfelt hospitality and will give you a real insight into everyday life.

If you’re even vaguely curious about wildlife, then yes. Indian safari lodges range from rustic to ridiculously comfortable, and they’re nearly always tucked away in peaceful, scenic settings. Many have excellent naturalists and guides, which really brings the experience to life. Just know that spotting tigers (or any big wildlife) isn’t guaranteed – but the thrill of the search is half the fun.

If you are drawn to nature in general, we recommend staying at at least one eco-lodge or wildlife resort. Set in atmospheric forests, plantations or mountain landscapes, you’ll wake up to India’s natural beauty while having a comfortable base to return to after outdoor explorations, from tiger tracking to birdwatching.

Honestly? That depends on your version of “unique”. It could be an off-the-beaten-track tented camp deep in tiger country, a special houseboat in Kerala with its own chef, a hidden haveli in Rajasthan or a beautifully restored palace in Madhya Pradesh. India’s full of one-off places to stay – the trick is knowing where to find them (which, lucky for you, we do).

For families – especially those with teens – we always suggest hotels with a pool. They’re a relief in the heat and tend to keep everyone upbeat.

We also recommend larger suites or interconnecting rooms, so there’s space to spread out and unwind. Bonus: Indian people adore children and are usually very welcoming.
