Set on the wild shores of Sumba, Cap Karoso takes its cues from a traditional village, reinterpreted with a modern, design-led approach.
While it delivers a high level of comfort, it still stays closely tied to the island’s landscape and culture. The remote position is hard to beat: a hillside above a wide, undeveloped white-sand beach that still feels like a discovery.
Sustainability and community run through it with real conviction, and the sense of place is consistent throughout.
Cap Karoso suits those who want real escapism: nature on the doorstep, genuine local connection, and enough remove from the world to actually switch off.
Naturally, there’s plenty of wild experiences: you can go snorkelling, have a surf lesson, or set off on guided cultural experiences like ikat weaving, traditional fishing and horse riding.
The Rooms
There are 44 rooms and 20 villas, ranging from studios to three-bedroom beachfront residences. Their design draws on Sumba’s craft traditions: hand-carved panels, bespoke ceramics, local artefacts, alongside stone, rattan and teak. It feels considered.
The villas are the best choice: private infinity pool, ample outdoor space and a genuine sense of seclusion. For families or groups, the beachfront villas, with direct beach access and room to spread out, are ideal.
