Ancient Hue Garden Houses
100 year old original buildings,
Slice of life outside Hue in Kim Long
Couples,
Families
Kim Long, a riverside village 4.5km from the centre of Hue, is where the Nguyen dynasty’s royal relatives and senior mandarins built their garden houses. Ancient Hue Garden Houses has restored five houses of this kind, each around 100 years old.
When we first saw it, we hadn’t come across anything like it in Vietnam.
Staying here means living inside that history. Every room is built from old timber and opens onto its own terrace, with the garden all around you.
The bikes are free, so take one out of the gate and you’re straight into village life. Kim Long’s lanes, gardens and family houses are a side of Hue most visitors only pass through on the way to the Citadel.
The Rooms
Ngu Binh is a single ground-floor room with the best view on the property, opening straight onto the pool. It’s our pick for couples of any age. Bach Ma has the largest rooms, looking over the garden and pool, and makes a lovely base for honeymooners.
Families are well looked after here. Truong Tien (a double and a twin) and Vong Canh (two doubles) each pair connecting rooms around a shared sitting room. Kim Phung’s two king rooms are linked by a private staircase and terrace. If you’re booking a single room in Vong Canh, ask for Vong Canh 1, which has the better view.
Worth knowing: traditional timber walls carry sound, and the rooms are on the darker side, as you’d expect in an original Hue house.
