Ahilya Fort, Maheshwar

Remote, relaxed, simply remarkable. Ahilya Fort is a real find in a very rural part of India. Fully integrated into the village, the fort is staffed mainly by local people. The distinctive character of this hotel is delightful and the view of the ghats below is truly spectacular. A real highlight is enjoying a gin and tonic overlooking the river at sunset and just taking it all in.

Constructed by Ahilya Bai Holkar in the 1800s, the fort is steeped in fascinating regional history. Maheshwar, for example, has been inhabited for around 4,000 years. The River Narmada is affectionately known as Madhya Pradesh’s lifeline and is a flurry of activity and colour best viewed from the hotel. You can stroll along the banks, take a wooden boat trip to Thousand Cascades, and bathe in the sacred waters. Baneshwa Shiva Temple and the Rehwa Society are also close by.

Thirteen unique rooms, suites, and tents are spread throughout six buildings, all tastefully decorated with lovely soft furnishings (albeit a little dated). There are plenty of areas for sitting, relaxing, and enjoying sundowners and the wonderful views. There's also a pool area and delicious international and Indian cuisine, often prepared right in front of you. The vegetables are sourced from the hotel's own organic garden.

If you need a high-end luxury experience with first-class facilities, you may find Ahilya a bit lacking. It’s laid-back and comfortable, and you’ll feel like you’re a part of everyday life in Maheshwar. We highly recommend staying here for a special experience in India.
