India, Madhya Pradesh
Info : Ahilya Fort
Ahilya Fort is a real find in an otherwise very remote part of India. Fully integrated into the village, the fort is staffed predominantly by local residents. The distinctive character of this hotel is delightful and the view of the ghats below is truly spectacular. A real highlight is enjoying a gin and tonic at sunset and just taking it all in. Come to Ahilya Fort for simplicity, tranquillity, and relaxation in Maheshwar.
Constructed by Ahilya Bai Holkar in the 1800’s, the fort is steeped in fascinating regional history. Maheshwar, for example, has been inhabited for around 4000 years. The River Narmada is affectionately known as Madhya Pradesh’s lifeline, and is a flurry of activity and colour best viewed from the hotel. You can stroll along the banks, take a wooden boat trip to Thousand Cascades, and bathe in the sacred waters. Baneshwa Shiva Temple and the Rehwa Society are close.
There are thirteen unique rooms, suites, and tents spread through six connected buildings, all tastefully decorated with lovely soft furnishings (albeit a little dated). There are plenty of areas for sitting, relaxing, and enjoying sundowners and the first class views. There is also a pool area and delicious international and Indian cuisine, often prepared right in front of you. The vegetables are sourced from the organic garden on-site.
If you need a high-end luxury experience with first class facilities, you may find Ahilya a bit lacking. It’s laid-back, comfortable, and you’ll feel like you’re a part of regular life in Maheshwar. Highly recommended for a pretty special experience in India.
Deluxe - This is our first really 'upmarket' category. It might be a beautiful tiny hotel with very limited facilities or a 5* resort hotel with all the trimmings; but any hotel in this category will be a well-run establishment with very comfortable rooms, a strong service ethos and excellent food.
