The eastern province of Mondulkiri is the most sparsely populated region in Cambodia, providing great opportunities to learn about Cambodia’s tribal minorities and conservation projects.
Mondulkiri means ‘meeting of the hills’, which is an apt name for this wild and verdant terrain comprising rolling hills, lush rainforests and powerful waterfalls. Wild animals roam in these parts, such as bears, leopards and elephants. Despite this, sightings are limited, and you’ll be more likely to spot birdlife, monkeys and wild pigs.

Sen Monorom is the capital of the province, with just several restaurants, bars and hotels. From here you can drive through the beautiful countryside, stop at one of the largest waterfalls in Cambodia in Bu Sra and visit traditional Phnong villages to learn more about their traditions and culture.
The main draw to the region for travellers are the conservation and ecotourism projects aiming to stop logging and poaching and look after sick, injured and abused elephants. The Elephant Valley Project is an NGO seeking to improve the health and welfare of domestic elephants in the area, as well as improving education and attitudes towards animal welfare. They provide a safe location covering many hectares of forest where they can roam free, and you can visit the centre for a day or even stay overnight to support their efforts. Experiences range from hanging out with several elephants for the day to learning about the animals, forest and local mahouts.
