It’s a significant cultural and artistic hub, and a real highlight for anyone keen on history. Lucknow once enjoyed the patronage of the Nawabs, who raised its profile as a centre for dance, music, and culinary arts. To this day, it retains its reputation for producing great music, art, and poetry.
The city follows the wandering Gomti River, and is full of lush green gardens. The older part of the city features predominantly British Raj era and Mughal monuments and buildings. Perhaps the most popular is the Bara Imambara shrine, built in 1784 in the Mughal style.
Lucknow’s culinary specialties include the Awadhi kebab, delicious chaat, biryani, and Dal Gosht. The people are courteous and the shopping is terrific, particularly for bangles, jhumkas, and Chikan embroidered kurtas.
