Vakkaru sits inside the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of the Baa Atoll, where lush jungle gives way to the white sand and under the water, you’ll find a pristine house reef.
It’s a fairly large island by Maldives standards but the bikes and buggies make it easy to get around. If you want a small resort where everything’s a two-minute walk, this isn’t it. What you get instead is more choice: over five restaurants, two bars, a spa, a gym, jungle cinema, and a proper house reef, that’s particularly exciting for those who want to snorkel and dive.
The design uses traditional Maldivian materials and colour, which feel current and contemporary.
Suits families and couples after an idyllic escape, and anyone who’d rather spend the week in the water than beside it.
Vakkaru’s wide array of cuisines mean meals never feel repetitive: grilled seafood one night, Asian fusion the next, Italian by the pool after that.
There’s a full dive centre, jet-skis, dolphin cruises, and excursions timed to catch manta rays and whale sharks, alongside an overwater spa and gym for the days you’d rather stay on dry land.
The Parrotfish Club keeps kids entertained and for teenagers, there’s the Coconut Club instead: with games like billiards, table tennis, foosball, board games, and a lounge to chill in.
The Rooms
There are 125 rooms and suites to choose between, from beach to overwater bungalows, with one to four bedrooms, depending who you’re travelling with.
They’re particularly great for families as they have interconnecting rooms, while some have small bedrooms with twin beds, perfect for younger children.
The overwater bungalows are particularly special: private sundecks, direct lagoon access, and on some jetties, a straight swim out to the house reef.
