Anantara’s Al Jabal Al Akhdar sits on the edge of a canyon amongst truly breathtaking scenery overlooking the jagged Hajar Mountains.
Only accessed by 4WD, it takes around two hours to get here from Muscat’s airport, while the ancient city of Nizwa is just 30 minutes away. Come here for a scenic and relaxing retreat, or an adventurous exploration of the mountains of Oman (or both!).
Little waterways and stone paths weave through the resort amongst plenty of greenery and rocks while earthy tones are used to blend the architecture into its natural surroundings. Staff are very attentive, knowledgeable and will ensure your stay is comfortable. There are plenty of places to eat, from more casual poolside and deli options to a Middle Eastern restaurant and shisha bar. For something extra special, staff can organise private tailor-made dining experiences in scenic locations around the resort.
The infinity pool spilling out over the cliffs with spectacular views of the surrounding landscape is a real highlight and is irresistible in the heat. Aside from lazing by the pool, you have an array of activities and excursions to keep you occupied. The resort is close to a modern village as well as some that have been abandoned, which can be explored on hikes. Head out mountain biking, wake up with sunrise yoga, take a painting or photography class or abseil down the cliffs. You can take part in a fascinating cultural experience where you’ll visit the Nizwa souk and fort before learning how to cook traditional Omani dishes. In the evenings, cosy up to the courtyard fireplace, peep through a telescope and do some stargazing or watch a movie under the stars at the outdoor cinema. To totally unwind, the spa provides an incredible array of treatments and facilities like a hammam, indoor pool and thermal suites.
The Rooms
Rooms are beautiful and well-appointed, all with views of the canyon from their balconies. The lead-in premier rooms are very spacious, though the Cliff Pool Villas are even more special. With much more space and a lovely living area, the highlight is the infinity pool facing out over the incredible landscape. The walls outside also retract, so you can connect two villas, making them ideal for families or groups.
In all, the Anantara offers great value for money, memorable experiences and quality accommodation, making it a wonderful place from which to explore Oman’s mountainous region.
