Salalah & Southern Oman, Eastern & Southern Oman, Oman
Exploring Historic East Salalah
Experience the historical highlights and unique culture of Oman’s southernmost province, Dhofar.
Begin in Taqah, a traditional fishing village, and gain insight into the area’s fascinating past at the 19th-century Taqah Castle. Explore the ancient ruins of Sumharam city, a UNESCO World Heritage site that sits along the historic incense route, once an important port which saw a great deal of the frankincense trade.
Lastly, visit Mirbat, Dhofar’s ancient capital, where the ‘Frankincense Trail’ began. Wander through the streets with your guide, taking in the classic Omani mud houses and the incredible and striking Bin Ali Tomb. The white twin domes of the mosque contrast dramatically against the rocky, desolate landscape strewn with gravestones.
You can end your day in Dhofar at the natural springs of Ayn Razat, which are fed with natural spring water from underground.
