Pimalai Resort & Spa
‘Goldilocks’ island setting,
Luxurious without feeling over the top
Couples,
Family
One of the first luxury stays on Koh Lanta, Pimalai Resort & Spa has been setting the standard on this perfectly sized Thai island for decades, and it’s still at the top of its game.
Perched in a prime position up high on a verdant hillside, it has panoramic views over a monkey-riddled forest down to the beautiful beach below, Kantiang Bay.
Bordering a protected national park, the setting feels secluded and unspoilt. Villas and rooms are scattered through tropical gardens, creating a sense of space and calm. It’s a place where the natural surroundings do much of the talking, with comfort and service keeping pace.
Pimalai is ideal for travellers who want a well-run beach resort without losing a sense of place. It suits couples and honeymooners particularly well, especially those drawn to privacy, views and a slower pace.
There’s plenty here if you want to stay active and some fun beach bars and restaurants within strolling distance, but equally, it’s easy to do very little. That’s what makes it the best of both worlds on the ‘Goldilocks’ island of Koh Lanta.
It’s got four restaurants serving Thai, seafood and international dishes, all supported by an excellent wine cellar. Not one but two generous swimming pools, and a spa with a full range of treatments in a calm setting. The gym hosts everything from Muay Thai sessions to yoga. For those keen to get out on the water, the PADI dive centre operates between November and April, with speedboats ready to reach some of the region’s best sites.
Beyond that, there’s plenty to dip into at your own pace: kayaking, sailing, tennis and cycling, as well as boat trips to nearby islands. Cookery classes and golf in Krabi can also be arranged if you’re in the mood.
The Rooms
Rooms and suites are spread across the grounds, each designed in a contemporary Thai style with warm textures, colourful fabrics and natural materials. Private sundecks and generous bathrooms, often with views across the bay, make it easy to settle in.
The villas are the standout choice, particularly the Pool Villas. Some sit close to the beach with direct access to the sand, while others are tucked higher into the hillside among coconut palms, opening out to wide sea views.
With this level of space and privacy, it’s easy to spend long stretches without feeling the need to leave. Options range from one to three bedrooms, making them well suited to both couples and families.
