Avana Retreat is a hidden gem set high in the green mountains of Vietnam’s Mai Chau Valley.
The remote retreat offers an escape from the more popular tourist spots, encouraging you to slow down and take stock of scenic, northwestern Vietnam and its rich cultural heritage.
Set across a whopping 15 hectares, the retreat looks out over a misty mountain valley covered in dense forest, rice fields, and hidden waterfalls. The area is home to three ethnic communities, whose traditions inspired the design and spirit of the resort.
Avana Retreat welcomes all kinds of travellers, whether you’re a family keen to explore the outdoors or a couple looking for space to breathe.
We recommend it to anyone wanting to feel immersed in Vietnam’s countryside and away from the tourist trail.
During your stay, you’ll connect with local culture through hands-on activities like batik painting, rattan weaving, fishing, and guided countryside walks.
If you’d rather simply relax, Avana’s ‘Cloud Pool’ is hard to beat: a three-tiered infinity pool with sweeping views and a poolside bar, perfect for a slow afternoon or evening tipple or two.
The Rooms
There are 36 bungalows, suites, and villas, designed and built using sustainable practices.
While they vary in size, all have rattan ceilings, palm leaf roofs, and earth walls.
While this may all sound very rugged, the interiors are charming and refined with comfort in mind, but still manage to create a sense of place with traditional wooden furniture and, of course, the large balconies looking out onto the surrounding forests and tiered rice fields.
