Formed an astounding 400 million years ago, the park comprises hundreds of cave systems and underground rivers, with more being discovered every year.
In 2009, an incredible discovery was made by a local farmer. He stumbled upon the Hang Son Doon or the Son Doon Cave, which was found to be the largest cave in the world. The main cavern alone, at some points, reaches heights of 200 metres and covers over 5km, with its own weather system inside. You’ll also find the largest known stalagmite residing inside, hanging at over 80m. In order to protect the cave and keep the impact of tourism at a minimum, it can only be explored on an exclusive organised tour at certain times of the year with Oxalis Adventure Tours. Aside from the caves, you can head out on treks, uncover the area’s war history or go mountain biking amongst other adventurous activities. The land in this part of Vietnam is abundant in biodiversity, home to Asian black bears, macaques, langurs, an array of birdlife, reptiles and even the threatened large-antlered muntjac.
Son Trach town is the area’s main hub with the best facilities and sits near the Son River.
