The beautiful sculptures were created during the Chandella dynasty with a rare lack of inhibition seldom seen in modern India. The erotic nature of the artwork is largely responsible for the fame that the temples have received in recent times, but they offer so much more than that. The western group of temples contain some particularly striking sandstone carvings and sculptures. As well as those depicting sexual intercourse and tantric poses, they feature couples in battle, courtship, marriage, meditation, royal scenes, and daily rituals. You have to admire the intricacy of the tantric poses and absorb the unique insight into the ancient Indian way of life. Women figures in particular are depicted with true skill and beauty; they are strong, idealistic, and voluptuous.
In February and March, the Festival of Dance takes place for a week against the backdrop of the western temples, a particularly colourful and vivid celebration featuring classic Indian dance performances.
