Nikoi Private Island
Family fun,
Castaway feeling
Families
Nikoi began with a rejection of the choice on offer near Singapore: only flea-ridden shacks or garish five-star hotels. Its owners found a barely-touched island off Bintan instead.
In 2005, with local craftspeople, driftwood and alang-alang grass, they built something closer to a village than a resort.
It’s made for free-spirited families; the ones happy to let their days unfold naturally. No set schedule in sight. No ‘Keep Off the Grass’ signs. Just an island to roam, barefoot.
Getting there takes just under 3 hours from Singapore’s Tanah Merah ferry terminal.
Nikoi suits families who want their children properly free-range; jetty jumping, coconut tree climbing and setting off on treasure hunts around the jungle. Meanwhile, parents can enjoy long lunches, unwind on the beach or wander to the spa, before a drink at the Sunset Bar, and coming together to refuel on fresh Indonesian or Mediterranean cuisine, en famille.
(Couples wanting the same setting without children are better suited to its adult-only sister island, Cempedak.)
Depending on your mood, you can explore the island by snorkelling in the pristine waters, paddleboarding, kayaking, rock climbing or using the jungle zip line. Children have a kids’ club they can dip in and out whenever they please, at no extra charge.
The Rooms
With 18 villas scattered across the island, Nikoi keeps an intimate feel throughout. Each is built from driftwood with alang-alang roofing, reflecting traditional Indonesian craftsmanship alongside a more contemporary form. Beach houses go a step further, using a double-layered roof so ocean breezes and the landmass’s natural cooling do the work of air conditioning.
One and Two-Bedroom Beach Villas sit closest to the shore, some with the option of a bunkroom for children, while Two and Three-Bedroom Pool Villas sit further out on the north beach: a natural choice for families wanting more separation and a private pool of their own.
For those wanting the most space, the Three-Bedroom Pool Villa spreads across three cottages with room to sleep up to nine, making it ideal for larger families or groups.
