Home to the famed orangutan amongst other fascinating plant and wildlife and endangered species, there are many protected areas that allow you to witness these beautiful creatures. Tanjung National Park is one of the best places to do so in Kalimantan’s centre, providing a close-up experience where you can venture to the depths of the jungle to spot orangutans, clouded leopards, sun bears and exotic birdlife just to name a few.
In the West, journey along the Kapuas river, the largest river in Indonesia, discovering tribal villages and Dayak longhouses along the banks. Head to the North and East for the best-preserved forests, home to the Dayak people, one of the most fascinating indigenous cultures in Indonesia, or visit Balikpapan for vibrant city life.
