Low-rise white buildings with intricate arabesque details stand in place of a glitzy, high rise skyline. Muscat also has a very different landscape, thanks to the dramatic backdrop of the sweeping Al Hajar Mountains.
There are of course similarities between Oman and its neighbours; Oman is a wealthy country with excellent roads and a range of high-quality hotels, but you cannot fail to appreciate the strong sense of tradition in Muscat. You might spot a state-of-the-art superyacht moored up next to an Arabic dhow boat in Muscat’s port, and, on the highways, you’re as likely to see a herd of goats as a luxury SUV! The city and its people seem to have embraced modernity while also proudly preserving their heritage in a way that is sure to charm you.
Must-sees for the first time visitor to this city include the immaculate Grand Mosque – simply magnificent with its elaborate chandeliers and one of the world’s largest Persian carpets. The Opera House is quite a treat as well and worth popping in to see, even if you’re not planning on watching a performance. An introductory tour would also incorporate a short walk along the Corniche, past the port and through the bustling souq and Mutrah fort where the aroma of burning frankincense and the sight of passing dhow boats evokes an atmosphere that is unique to Arabia.
Most visitors to Muscat will stay at a beach hotel. It is always hot and sunny, so it’s a great place for a relaxing holiday in the sun with a dash of sightseeing (most beach hotels are within easy reach of the sights).
