Info : Explore the magnificent Angkor Wat
Angkor Wat is a must see to any first time visitor to Cambodia and with our expertise, we can really bring your visit to life. Our expert guides are able to arrange timings so you can avoid the coach parties and throngs of tourists. They can also tell you the human stories behind the huge facades, explaining thoughts on how they came to be built and why?
Angkor Wat is perhaps Southeast Asia's most recognisable site, with its five stupas rising out of the jungle. It even appears on Cambodia's national flag. Built by Khmer king Suryavarman II in the 12th century, it is the single largest religious structure in the world. Its stupas were built to represent Mount Meru, the sacred mountain and centre of the universe in Hindu and Buddhist mythology and the structure still holds a feeling of auspiciousness and symbolic power even today. The temple itself is beautiful and is adorned with carvings of 'Apsaras', supernatural women.
The other Angkor temples surrounding the Siem Reap area number over a thousand and all were built at different times and with different purposes. Preah Khan and Ta Prom are well-known because of the tree roots that have taken over parts of the temple giving them a real 'Tomb Raider' feel, while the mysterious and enigmatic Bayon features 216 faces carved into the temple, gazing peacefully out into the jungle.
This is just to scratch the surface of the sheer variety and artistic and engineering acheivements in evidence at Angkor. You'll need at least 2 days, if not more.
