Set on the curve of a river in the little-explored Cardamom Mountains, close to the Cambodia-Thailand border, this floating tented lodge is an memorable and magical escape with a strong sustainable ethos.
Surrounded by unspoiled forest, rare orchids and fragrant frangipani trees, it is quite likely that you will spend most of your time out exploring the mountains and their flora and fauna. In addition to the beautiful setting and unique accommodation, the resort has a library and a great restaurant serving a mix of western and Asian food, with river fish the regional speciality.
Ideal for couples, families and anyone remotely interested in discovering the beautiful scenery that Canvas & Orchids is surrounded by.
Activities and excursions are varied and plentiful. Kayaking, swimming, fishing and boat trips to nearby mangroves are available right from the edge of your veranda. Further afield you can walk in the Cardamom Mountains and explore rural villages. Our pick of excursions is the 40-minute boat ride to the Tatai waterfalls; there are not many places in Southeast Asia with such a picture-perfect river setting.
The Cardamom Mountains and rainforests are a wildlife enthusiast’s paradise, with many rare species hiding away in its wilds. Javan rhinoceros, Indochinese tigers, Asian elephants and cloud leopard are all believed to inhabit the range. There is also thought be over 500 species of birds here making it a real must for keen bird watchers.
The Rooms
Think canvas, but up a notch. They’re safari-style sanctuaries, primed for peaceful immersion in the wilderness.
Floating Tented Villas sit directly on the Tatai River, with private decks that let you slip straight into the water for a swim. Inside, you’ll find handcrafted furniture, thoughtful eco touches, and plenty of space to stretch out. Each villa is designed with the environment in mind – right down to the toothbrushes and clever wastewater systems that halve the carbon footprint.
Island Tents (either doubles or families) are set on a small river island, shaded by coconut palms and just a few steps from the riverbank. Family tents come with two bedrooms and a shared bathroom, ideal for those travelling with kids or friends. Expect comfy beds, private balconies, and sunbeds for lazy afternoons.
This is luxury – but low impact. Comfortable, considered, and characterful.
