A cold towel, a refreshing drink and the sound of a gong: arrival at Tanjong Jara is a gentle introduction to Malay hospitality.
Tanjong Jara sits on a peaceful stretch of white sand on Peninsular Malaysia’s east coast, near Kuala Terengganu, backed by lush jungle. The resort is inspired by traditional Malay palaces, and the service is warm, gracious and attentive.
It’s a calm, characterful place to slow down, with plenty to discover when you’re ready to explore.
The beach is secluded and good for swimming, and there are two pools, including one just for adults.
The food is a real draw. The resort’s cooking school is excellent, and classes start with a trip to the local market to choose ingredients.
The team also organise a lovely range of excursions, from waterfall treks and bike rides to jungle and river cruises, plus diving and snorkelling around Pulau Tenggol. Between May and September, you may be lucky enough to see turtles hatching on the beach.
All in all, this is a beautifully run beach resort with genuine Malay soul.
The Rooms
The rooms are designed in traditional Malay style and luxuriously furnished.
Choose from rooms with verandahs and sea views, or options with outdoor baths, private tropical gardens or a spot right on the beach.
The Bumbung Sea View rooms are especially spacious, with sweeping views over the South China Sea.
