Tabin Wildlife Reserve, Sabah, Borneo
Tabin Wildlife Night Walk
Established in 1984 to protect the rich biodiversity of northeastern Borneo, the Tabin Wildlife Reserve spans over 1,225 km² and is a sanctuary for countless endangered species and rare plants.
Surrounded by agricultural land, this reserve acts as a vital refuge for Borneo’s unique wildlife, from hornbills and pygmy elephants to the elusive clouded leopard.
While daytime nature treks offer wonderful opportunities to explore the rainforest, the real magic of Tabin often happens after dark. Many of its most fascinating creatures are nocturnal, emerging under the cover of night to forage and hunt. A guided night trek offers the chance to spot species that are rarely seen during the day, such as civets, flying squirrels, and owls.
One of the highlights of the night trek is the possibility of spotting the magnificent clouded leopard – Borneo’s largest cat – known for its distinctive cloud-like markings and unusual ability to climb down trees head-first. Expert guides bring the forest to life with insights into animal behaviour, plant life, and the delicate balance of this unique ecosystem.
