In India, a heritage hotel refers to a restored palace, fort, ‘haveli’ (private traditional mansion) or a hunting lodge welcoming guests. Most are in Rajasthan or neighbouring Madhya Pradesh.
Many of these evocative buildings are still run by their owners, who are often former princely families.
These hotels range from the fabulously luxurious to charming, faded grandeur, but they all have character in spades and hum with old-world India. Timeless, atmospheric, and often just a little eccentric.
It’s worth bearing in mind that, given their age, some of these buildings may have quirky architecture, erratic plumbing, low doorways or unguarded drops. Heritage hotel management differs from conventional hotels, and service may be idiosyncratic, although it is almost always friendly.

We thoroughly recommend experiencing at least one of these places during your holiday as there’s something utterly magical and specifically Indian about these hotels.
That said, the label ‘Heritage Hotel’ gets thrown around quite freely in India, so quality does vary. We tend to skip the ones used for big group tours, as they lose that personal, exclusive atmosphere that ETG travellers are usually after.
Talk to us, and we’ll make suggestions for your luxury India holiday so you have the best experience imaginable.
