Off-The-Beaten-Track Sikkim & West Bengal
Discover the rural towns and villages of scenic Sikkim and West Bengal as you gain an insight into Himalayan ways of life.
This traditional Sikkimese ancestral home has been renovated into a rural farm stay, providing a lovely spot to relax and enjoy the beautiful, idyllic surroundings. Sitting amongst acres of pine forest and fruit trees, you’ll be treated to spectacular views out to the five peaks of Kanchenjunga from all areas of the property. Friendly local staff and the family are passionate about their property and will look after you well, providing kind hospitality, delicious food and exciting experiences.
In the atmospheric main house, you’ll find the deck is a lovely spot to relax in an armchair, simply take in the mountain views and perhaps even do some bird watching. The infinity pool looks out to the valley and is surrounding by lush vegetation. If you’re lucky and the lighting is right, the mountain peaks even reflect in the water. Dining is an experience in itself. You’ll be treated to deliciously fresh produce, much of which is picked from the surrounding trees and farms. Breakfast is served on the deck, lunch in a Sikkimese-style room and dinner in the dungeon, which they have converted into a beautiful stone dining room.
You don’t even need to venture far away from the property if you don’t wish as there is plenty to do. Enjoy a hot stone bath in a wooden tub, visit the organic farm and Sunday market, learn how to make momos and cook over a wood fire or have a picnic by the river. For the more adventurous, you can head out on short treks and village walks, or even spend half a day working on the farm! We highly recommend using your host’s incredible local knowledge to get further insight into local life.
The eight rooms are free-standing chalets sitting amongst the trees and are spread out around the grounds and away from the main house. There is plenty of space here, so you are guaranteed privacy, although for those with walking difficulties should note that there is a couple of minutes walk between the chalet and main house. The chalets are basic but clean and comfortable, with lovely balconies or sit outs and views out of your window. For families, there are also interconnecting rooms accommodating four people.
Biksthang Heritage Farmhouse is a true gem in the Sikkim region. Come here for both an engaging, authentic and adventurous stay, immersing yourself totally in the natural beauty and local life.
Homestay - What we mean by 'Homestay' is generally a large family owned house, still occupied by at least some members of the family. Interaction with guests is encouraged and is in fact unlikely to be avoided! These places always have bags of character are usually highly charming and can provide a fascinating shortcut towards understanding local life a little better. Facilities can range from the luxurious, to pretty basic and meals are generally taken as a group and served in the local style rather than from a menu. The service is almost always fairly quirky and idiosyncratic. Great fun.
