Old Delhi is the old walled city, founded by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jehan who brought about Delhi’s glorious renaissance and his legacy is clear to see today.
Start the day with a cycle rickshaw ride through Old Delhi, where you will see the formidable Red Fort, built behind huge red sandstone walls that rise above the old city.
Chandni Chowk, the avenue heading west from the Red Fort, was once the commercial centre of the city and it is filled with twisting lanes and crowded bazaars. Peer through its porticos to see intense commerce in action. You will then visit Raj Ghat, the memorial to Mahatma Gandhi; Jama Masjid, the largest mosque in India; Qutub Minar tower; and Humayun’s Tomb, generally believed to be the prototype of the Taj Mahal.
In the heart of New Delhi you will see the imposing India Gate, which stands 42m high and commemorates the 70,000 Indian soldiers who lost their lives fighting for the British in the First World War.
Travel on to President House, the official residence of the Viceroy of India, with its private garden designed by Lutyens. Finally, visit Parliament House, the symbol of Indian democracy.
Your guide will be local to Delhi, someone who can bring the legacy of Delhi’s glorious past to life and put into context the fascinating city that Delhi has become today.
