Remote Rajasthan, Tigers and the Taj Mahal
Explore the cities and off-the-beaten-track rural Rajasthan, tigers at Ranthambore and the Taj Mahal.
Nestled on a quiet hilltop between Agra and Ranthambore National Park, Ramathra Fort is a private property that has been lovingly converted into a luxury boutique hotel and camping experience over the years. The owner and his family are direct descendants of the founder, Thakur Bhoj Pal. Today, Ramathra Fort is a unique rural boutique experience, and the drawcard is undoubtedly the splendid surroundings, the beautiful lake, and the village life surrounding the fort.
From the top of the hills, the views across the plains are striking, and the best place to relax and take it all in is from a hot tub located on top of one of the old fort turrets. On the grounds, you’ll find luxury tents, rooms, and suites. The suites, in particular, are highly recommended, each with its private terrace and outdoor bathtub. Alternatively, the luxury tents are spacious and surrounded by meticulously maintained green gardens, each with its bathhouse and private porch.
The fort itself is the attraction in the area, and there isn’t much in the way of sightseeing nearby, although jeep safaris can be arranged and the surrounding countryside is perfect for exploring. The food is delicious and locally sourced. You can also interact with locals and observe rural activities in a way that isn’t contrived or touristy.
It is a bit of an adventure to reach, as the surrounding roads are fairly rough making the journey to and from quite difficult. If you can survive that the very inaccessibility of Ramathra Fort makes it an extraordinary and secluded place for couples and families to stay, far off the beaten track.
If you love the idea of peace, quiet, and isolation, we would definitely recommend spending a few nights here.
Superior - This is what we would describe as our standard category. These will be decent 3/4* hotels providing a really good level of service. We would generally expect them to be providing a little something extra, in terms of character, guest experience or facilities too.
