Amanwella, Tangalle

Entering along the unsigned gravel road which approaches Amanwella, there is little suggestion of the splendour that awaits. The resort's thirty luxury suite rooms curve discretely around one of the island's most beautiful crescent-shaped bays, flanked by two rocky headlands at either end. The calm waters are ideal for swimming alongside the soft golden sands of the beach. Located in Tangalle, the heart of Sri Lanka's southern region, the location of Amanwella is picture postcard paradise.

Each of the suites has a private, secluded plunge pool located at the rear as you enter, and sea view terrace's at the front. Tall, glass panelled windows stretch the entire length of the frontage, allowing light to stream in. Through the glass, there are delightful views of the ocean's turquoise waters past the coconut palms which adorn the resort's grassy grounds. Wooden shutters slide across the windows to shut out the world if desired. The interiors of Amanwella are contemporary: the atmosphere changing with the sunlight. Lavish and luxurious, the suites somehow retain a feeling of space and minimalism, testimony to the design approach and attention to detail that is evident at every turn.

The suites have been designed with complete relaxation in mind; tasteful cushioned lounge areas throughout by the plunge pool, within the room and on the sea-facing terrace. The bathrooms, which are separated from the suite by sliding wooden panels, are sumptuously decadent and spacious, all with views of the ocean below.

The main infinity pool measures almost fifty metres in length, with views across the ocean. There is a terrace adjoining with shady sun loungers and attentive waiter service. Amanwella resort offers a host of spa treatments which are available in a number of exotic locations or from the privacy of your suite. The restaurant, with its panoramic views and light atmosphere, serves food of an exceptionally high standard. In addition, food and drinks are served on the water's edge throughout the day.

It is pristine in every sense, and the delicate colours of the built environment blend peacefully and calmly into the vibrant colours of the natural surroundings. Indeed, the name Amanwella is derived from two words; 'Aman', meaning 'peace' in Sanskrit, and 'Wella', meaning beach in Sinhala.
