Desert fortresses and vivid blue streets

Jodhpur is a city bathed in vivid blue, sometimes overlooked in favour of its larger and busier counterpart, Jaipur. Known as both the “blue city” and the “sun city” (Jodhpur enjoys sunshine all year round), this medieval city perched in the mighty Thar Desert in western Rajasthan is a fascinating, intricate maze of alleyways and crooked corners, all protected somewhat possessively by a ten kilometre, 16th century wall with eight gated entrances. Originally, the blue painted residencies were identified as Brahmin, members of the priestly caste in India, but word caught on quickly, and the Brahmin blue is now widely used all over the city.

Although modern Jodhpur stretches out for kilometres beyond the wall, the sights and scenery within the old city are what captivate visitors. The mighty Mehrangarh Fort itself is mammoth and imposing, perched 120 metres above the city, accessible by a winding road, and the museum and galleries here are legendary. Umaid Bhawan Palace (also known as the Chittar Palace) is a sprawling 347 room royal residence with spectacular landscaped gardens. Once you’ve ticked off the must-see tourist highlights, save some time to zip wire over the fort (if your nerves will allow it), or go on a jeep safari under the stars in the Thar Desert. Visit Bishnoi tribes, stay in heritage hotels, ride a Marwari horse or a camel.
