North Male Atoll
The Maldives, Central Islands
Info : Male City Tour
Explore the historic city of Male, capital of the Maldives and get a sense of ordinary life for the locals. Highlights include a visit to the fruit and vegetable market where you can sample some fresh cold coconut water and try some of the various produce for sale. You’ll also visit the large fish market where you can see fishermen deboning huge tuna fish that have earlier been sold by auction. The name Male is thought to have come from the Maldivian word for ‘big blood,’ coming from all the fish trade on the island that is situated between the most northerly and southerly atolls.
Visit the 17th Century Mosque made out of coral and heavily influenced by Moroccan architecture; it was Moroccan traders that introduced Islam to the Maldives in the 7th century having previously been a Buddhist country. See the PLOTE Attack memorial, an incredible story wherein a group of mercinaries from north of Sri Lanka came to take over The Maldives. With you expert guide with you throughout you can ask any other questions you may have about the country’s history and culture.
