Indonesia Family Holiday Ideas

Indonesia is an incredible destination for a family holiday. The vast archipelago has kaleidoscopic landscapes – where lush paddy fields collide with smoldering volcanoes and soft-white sand rolls into bright-blue ocean. Wonderful wildlife – from the legendary Komodo dragon to the orangutan – and secluded spots for switching off from the stresses and strains of life back home. You’ll love Indonesia’s laid-back vibe and embrace ‘elastic time’.

First-class Island Hopping in Indonesia

Fantastic journey, away from the tourists hotspots, of Java, Borneo, Bali and Komodo. All means of transport and wide variety of experiences from primary jungle to volcanos to dragons.

Temples, Volcanoes and Dragons of Indonesia

A 16 night family holiday with 2 teenage boys. We did enough cultural visits to keep mum happy but with volcano visit, swimming pools, Komodo dragons, snorkelling and seeing Manta rays the boys had a fantastically diverse holiday. I have used Experience Travel Group three times now and would highly recommend them.

The Best Times to Go on a Family Holiday in Indonesia

Luckily, the school summer holidays are a glorious time to visit Indonesia. The weather is at its best, so do plan ahead if you’d like to get your hands on your top choices of family-friendly hotels and villas.

We’ll always make sure you dodge the crowds but if you’d like to explore the most popular islands like Bali and Java outside of peak season, consider going in May, June or September.

Christmas is the prime time to visit the far-flung gem of Raja Ampat, when the sea is calm and clear, perfect for spectacular snorkelling that’s sure to blow your teen’s expectations out the water (literally).

A Note on Christmas

Yes, you can skip the whole thing. Swap roast potatoes and Boxing Day telly for grilled snapper by the sea, with traditional boats bobbing in the bay and kids snorkelling off the beach. But if you’re not quite ready to ditch the festive cheer, don’t worry. Many Indonesian hotels love a celebration, from lantern-lit dinners to tropical twists on Christmas trees.

Overwhelmed by the end-of-term chaos? We get it. Luckily, your ETG consultant can help turn the madness into magic. Whether it’s a gamelan music lesson in Bali or hand-carved masks from Java, you’ll find incredible presents en route that beat a last-minute online panic any day.

Important FAQs about Family Holidays in Indonesia

Mostly, yes. While spicy sambals aren’t for everyone, you’ll find lots of dishes kids love: satay sticks, fried rice (nasi goreng), and banana pancakes, to name a few. Western options are usually available too.

Not necessarily. In summer and Easter, many regions are warm and dry but not oppressive. We always factor in shade, downtime, and pools to keep the balance right.

Absolutely. With private guides and carefully chosen accommodation, you can have brilliant wildlife experiences like spotting dragons or orangutans – without sacrificing comfort.

We’ll handle all transfers and flights, and you’ll travel with expert local drivers and guides. Boats, bikes, and scooters might all feature too—but always safely and always at your pace.
