Banda Islands of Indonesia

The Banda Islands of Indonesia are 200km from the nearest port town of Ambon and they lie peacefully in the Banda sea, roughly 2000km east of Java. As one of the most famously beautiful spots in an archipelago teeming with them, the Banda Islands are much lusted over, but little visited. Just the sort of place then, that globetrotter and travel writer, Sophy Roberts, likes to visit and write about. Have a look at her piece ‘Where the Wild Things Are” here in Mr Porter Magazine.

The Banda Islands were once famous for their spices and in particular the highly valued nutmeg that was grown there (at one point Nutmeg was the world’s most expensive commodity, a shocking fact for anyone forced to eat nutmeggy Simnel Cake). The story always told about Banda is about how the Dutch traded Manhattan for the last remaining island in Banda not under their control; Run.

You don’t have to go to such lengths these days to get to the Banda Islands, though it is undoubtedly still expensive and logistically complicated enough to (severely) limit the number of visitors. That means that the intrepid few who do make it have the jaw dropping scenery, the glorious beaches, pretty coves and steep drops offs, pretty much to themselves.

At Experience Travel Group we’re pretty well versed in complicated East Indonesia itineraries and would be happy to talk you through the options. At the time of writing, there are still several cabins available on scheduled departures to Banda on Tiger Blue in 2016 (the next one is mid April – contact us for details). Taking a cabin on a scheduled departure, makes this a viable, if still very special option. Tiger Blue and other luxury yachts, are also available for charter to Banda of course too, for added exclusivity and privacy.

The other main parts of Tiger Blue’s schedule, Komodo and Raja Ampat, also score pretty highly in the “My Lord, I can’t quite believe I’m here” stakes too… Speak to one of our Indonesia holiday specialists today or fill in this form here.
