The Best Times to Go on a Holiday in Indonesia
Indonesia’s weather varies across its many islands, but the dry season from May to September is ideal for most destinations. This is the best time for diving, sailing and exploring.
October to April brings the rainy season to many regions. That said, rain often comes in bursts and can offer lush scenery and fewer crowds. Some parts of Indonesia, like Bali’s central highlands and parts of Sumba, remain appealing year-round.
We’ll help you match your route to the seasons. View our Indonesia weather guide.

In Our Traveller’s Words
The Best Luxury Experiences in Indonesia
ETG experiences in Indonesia are rich, immersive and a little magical. Picture yourself sailing between islands on a private yacht under a sky full of stars, snorkelling with manta rays in Komodo National Park, walking through the rice paddies with a Balinese Brahmin, watching the sunrise over Borobudur, enjoying a private feast prepared in a remote village, and learning from local people about sacred traditions and daily life.

South Sulawesi
Explore Tangkoko Nature Reserve
Venture into the terrific Tangkoko Nature Reserve in North Sulawesi, which lies far off the typical tourist trail in Indonesia.
Bordering a stretch of the volcanic coastline of northern Sulawesi, Tangkoko Nature Reserve’s protected rainforest is a sanctuary for fascinating, free-roaming wildlife.
Here, you can come face-to-face with the friendly, critically endangered black crested macaques, spot the native bear cuscus, and watch for birdlife from hornbills to kingfishers.
Join a night walk with a park ranger to spot small, Yoda-like tarsiers clinging to the trees and take a peaceful boat ride through the mangroves to admire the reserve’s rich flora and fauna from the water.

Komodo National Park, Indonesia
Explore Komodo
Komodo National Park sits right in the middle of the Indonesian archipelago, between the islands of Sumbawa and Flores. It’s made up of three main islands – Rinca, Komodo and Padar – and a smattering of smaller volcanic islets.
There’s a lot to explore here, both above and below the turquoise water. While the celebrated Komodo dragons found on Rinca and certain islands steal the spotlight, the park is also home to wild deer, buffalo, boars, monkeys, wild horses, sea eagles, sulfur-crested cockatoos and flying foxes.
With ETG, you’ll discover secret coves as well as visit the main highlights like Padar Island, which has arguably the most impressive panorama of the surreal scenery, and the Pink Beach (a wonderful place for snorkelling – snorkels and fins will be provided).
You’ll also have the chance to track the infamous dragons on dry land, looking out for the dens and nests and learning a lot more about this mysterious creature from a guide.

Borobudur, Java, Indonesia
Explore the Mysteries of Borobudur Temple
Borobudur, a vast 9th-century Buddhist temple set an hour north of Yogyakarta, is one of Southeast Asia’s most remarkable ancient sites. Built from over two million carved stones, it rises in terraces with intricate reliefs and 72 stupas housing statues of Buddha. Lost for centuries and later restored, it’s now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The best time to see it is at sunrise — we know a secret hilltop spot for an unforgettable view of the temple complex, framed by mist-laden jungle and volcanoes.

Countryside Walk with a Balinese Priest
Spend a day exploring the countryside on this private walking tour, getting a unique insight into Balinese nature, religion and culture.
As much as the walk is about exploring the paddy fields and local villages, it is also about getting a sense of what makes Bali especially unique. Your guide is not just a nature guide, he is also a local Brahmin. Brahmins are the designated priestly castle in the Hindu religion, and as you explore, your guide will explain how a complex set of rituals and offerings are remarkably entwined in daily life.
After the walk, you’ll finish up at the guide’s house, where you will receive a traditional lunch, followed by an atmospheric Balinese blessing.

Bonjeruk Community Village
‘A Day in the Life of Bonjeruk’ is an excellent community tourism initiative in a rarely visited corner of Lombok.
The morning begins when you meet one of the local women who guide the tours, who’ll accompany you on a two-hour walk around the village, where you’ll see how traditional weaving and cooking are still practised.
Take a walk through the paddy fields before you arrive at the open-air lunch setting, where you’ll help make some satay before enjoying the finished product for lunch. There’s an optional scenic bicycle ride in the surrounding area after you’ve eaten.
