A visit to The Temples of Angkor needn't mean jostling for prime position with hundreds of other tourists. Travelling a little further out of Siem Reap (about 70 km) with your guide brings you to the much less-visited, impressive complexes of Koh Ker and Beng Mealea in the remote countryside.
Beng Mealea is on the same size, scale and style as Angkor Wat. Though un-restored, it is one of the major monuments of the classical period. Koh Ker is a 10th century capital with spectacular panoramic views from the peak. There are surrounding temples at both complexes. The journey will take you through rural villages and deserted forest wildernesses en-route to the stunning temples, which date from different eras.
