Ellerton, Kandy Sri Lanka, Kandy and Around
Ellerton was built for a tea estate manager over 100 years ago and it retains the character and peacefulness of that long passed time, in its present incarnation as a small boutique hotel.
Ellerton is close to the geographic centre of Sri Lanka sitting on its own hill just outside the World Heritage City of Kandy. At 2,400 feet Ellerton combines the best of Sri Lanka's weather. The sun in the day is hot, while the evenings and nights are relatively cool without the stickiness of the coast, nor the distinct chill of the hill country.
The beautiful gardens are full of interesting flowers, butterflies and birds including the the Golden Oriole, the Sri Lankan Hanging Parrot, the Plum Headed Parakeet and various Sunbirds. The garden also provides vegetables and fruit for the house. The countryside around Ellerton is crossed by many paths and tea estate roads, making walking and biking easy and delightful.
Ellerton is informal and can accommodate most requirements for meals.
The Main House has a large sitting room furnished with antiques, a dining room which seats 12 and a study where you can watch international news via satellite TV. There are 3 guest bedrooms, one double and two family rooms, each with their own bathrooms.
The Valley House is near the swimming pool, and some thirty yards away from the main house. It has spectacular views and has three generous bedrooms, two double and a twin, the double bedrooms have their own bathrooms whilst the twin has a shower. A great advantage of the Valley House is the huge veranda which is a natural place to sit and read.
The 7th is called the Garden Room- this is a self-contained unit with a bedroom and a bathroom.
All in all, Ellerton is a great base for exploring Kandy and the surrounding countryside.
Deluxe - This is our first really 'upmarket' category. It might be a beautiful tiny hotel with very limited facilities or a 5* resort hotel with all the trimmings; but any hotel in this category will be a well-run establishment with very comfortable rooms, a strong service ethos and excellent food.
Ellerton was just beautiful, we were in the main house and our room was lovely, if we stayed again I think we would prefer the Valley House so we could make use of that lovely terrace, although it communal there wasn't really enough space for everyone to use it. Staff and food first class and would love to go back.
Ellerton was the highlight of our trip. Loved it and wanted to stay longer. We met the owner on our last night. I cannot find anything wrong with Ellerton it fulfilled a dream staying in a well-run plantation house. Everything was in top shape, their laundry service the best, their collection of books about Sri Lanka the best, and the only well trained staff in all the places we stayed. Delightful.
The Ellerton was exactly as described - an ex-colonial gem. Again very friendly, and with the 'old-school' amenities very welcome after the Mud House basics. The weather was severe during our stay there, so we couldn't explore much. But the rain didn't stop us enjoying the pool. As it was off season, the kids could do their own thing to a great extent. Food also very good. Sri Lankan dishes more westernised - but also very easy for catering for the kids. The inclusion of evening drinks and wine with the meal was very welcome.
Ellerton was AMAZING - we would love to go back there - great staff, lovely house, beautiful food, great location.
Ellerton was stunning - beautiful gardens and lovely walks.
The accommodation was also good, especially the stopover in Ellerton. Wonderful spot with superb views and excellent food. I could have stayed longer!

This was an excellently organised, tailor-made trip. We stayed in friendly hotels in a number of different locations, including a mud house in the jungle, beside a lake and in the hills among the tea plantations. We had a wonderful guide/driver and visited some amazing temples, spectacular world heritage sites, lovely villages and ate delicious, freshly harvested and cooked local food. It was a fabulous holiday!
