The Birdlife of Sri Lanka

As with all our holidays, this itinerary is just a starting point. We will create a bespoke package which will be completely unique for you.

Day 1

Your adventure begins

Depart your home country for your flight to Sri Lanka.

Days 2 - 3

Negombo

Your private chauffeur-guide will welcome you to the island and whisk you to your first hotel. The retreat is a great place to relax with great hospitality, a swimming pool and a light introduction to Sri Lanka’s birds with Crimson-Backed flame back, Pied Kingfishers and Red Wattle Lapwings spotted in the area.

Days 4 - 5

The Knuckles Mountain Range

With your chauffeur-guide, you’ll head to the edge of the Knuckles Mountain Range for your next stay.

This hillside villa, set among tea plantations, offers space, privacy and wide views across the valley. Birdlife is constant here, and there’s even a telescope on the balcony for closer sightings.

We recommend venturing deeper into the Knuckles range on foot; almost 75% of Sri Lanka’s endemic bird species are found here, including Layard’s Parakeet, Brown-capped Babbler and Yellow-fronted Barbet.

Days 6 - 7

The Tea Country

At Kandy station, board the train towards Nanu Oya, a scenic climb into Sri Lanka’s tea country. Your chauffeur-guide will be waiting on arrival to continue the journey to your lodge, set high among the plantations.

You won’t need to venture far to look for wildlife, as you will be right in the middle of it! Spend a day trekking on Horton Plains, where you can look out for for endemics such as the Ceylon White-eye, Dull-blue Flycatcher and Whistling Thrush, alongside migratory birds including the Kashmiri Flycatcher.

Days 8 - 10

Southern Parks

Continue southeast and check in at Flameback Eco Lodge. The property is next to a bird sanctuary between Yala, Uda Walawe and Bundala National Parks and close to Kalemtiya Bird Sanctuary. Its position allows you to explore several distinct habitats from one base; from Yala with its leopards and rare black-necked stork to the elephants of Uda Walawe and the rich dry-zone birdlife of Bundala. Bundala National Park alone records around 197 bird species, particularly waders, making this stretch of coastline one of Sri Lanka’s most rewarding regions.

Days 11 - 12

Sinharaja Rainforest

Continue on to the lowland rainforest of Sinharaja, one of Sri Lanka’s richest reserves for endemic birdlife. At least 17 of the island’s 33 endemic species are recorded here.

You’ll stay at a lodge overlooking the forest canopy, well placed for early starts. Spend a full day exploring the rainforest with a qualified guide, focusing on the species found only in this last remaining tract of primary forest.

Days 13 - 14

Kithulgala

Follow the curve of the southeast coast and head north through the small town of Kithulgala and into the hills to your boutique jungle lodge. The surrounding rainforest is home to an impressive array of bird species, including the Sri Lankan Spot-Winged Thrush, the Grey Hornbill, the Ceylon Jungle Fowl, and the recently discovered Serendip Scoops Owl. Take a guided trip into the forest to see what you can spot, or stay at the lodge and let the birds come to you as you relax by the pool.

Days 14 - 15

Colombo

Spend your last night in the heart of Colombo. With a naturalist, explore the city’s fascinating wetlands region and get under the city’s surface with our local signature tour.

Day 16

Fly home

Sadly, it’s time to wave goodbye to the island. Your driver will drop you off at Colombo airport to depart for your flight back home.

All accommodation
Many meals and snacks
Immersive experiences throughout
All regional transport
Gratuities
24/7 In-Country support

Pricing:

Each journey is shaped around you, so costs vary depending on season, flight choices, accommodation and how much is built in.

As a guide, most of our two-week trips fall between £5,000 and £10,000 per person.

Some fall below that, particularly for families or travel outside peak periods. Others go beyond it when the brief includes business-class flights, longer stays, or more ambitious hotel choices.

We discuss budget early, so everything is clear from the start.

Meet Our Sri Lanka Experts

Holly has travelled extensively across Sri Lanka, from its national parks to its lesser-known highlands. She designs holidays with a clear sense of structure and pace, combining the island’s defining wildlife experiences with hidden regions, choosing lodges for their position and purpose rather than profile.

“This itinerary shows you Sri Lanka at its most alive. Even those who don’t consider themselves birders are often surprised by how compelling it becomes.”
