The History of Ben Thanh Market

The market first developed in the early 17th century, whereby street vendors would gather near the Saigon River to sell their goods. Developed by the French, the market was initially named Les Halles Centrales but was then rebuilt and renamed ‘Ben Thanh’ in 1912. Today, the stalls welcome over 10,000 visitors per day to shop, featuring 6,000+ small businesses selling clothes, bags, shoes, souvenirs and food.

Where is Ben Thanh Market?

Ben Thanh market is in the centre of Hồ Chí Minh in Ben Thanh Ward, District 1. On the intersection of four busy streets, the market has a prominent location, making access fairly simple. The main entrance can be found on Le Loi street, but you can also access it via Le Thanh Ton, Phan Boi Chau or Phan Chau Trinh.

Visiting the Night Market

Whilst the market is open from 6 am each day, many visit after the sun sets to enjoy the iconic night scene. From 6 pm the vendors set up brightly lit stalls, selling mostly the same products as during the day. At night, however, there is a stronger emphasis on food and drink, with some stalls offering seating options. The market truly booms at this time, as many of the locals decide to visit after working hours.
