This holiday is a real adventure designed for people more interested in what Borneo offers beyond its wildlife (although a wildlife element can be added if preferred).

It starts with a 5-day adventure in Mulu National Park that includes the "Headhunters Trail" and also includes the rewarding challenge of climbing Mount Kinabalu.

Beyond this, you'll also get an authentic feel for the depth and variety of Borneo's wildlife, village life, culture, and tradition. Accommodation ranges from simple, traditional longhouses and basic lodgings during the treks, to top-quality hotels, especially at the beach.

  • Explore the magnificent cave chambers and climb Mt Api to view the Pinnacles in Mulu National Park
  • Visit indigenous tribes and stay in their traditional longhouse
  • Trek the trail taken historically by the Kayan "headhunters" who travelled upriver and forest on their raids
  • Discover World Heritage Kinabalu Park, a flora enthusiast’s dream
  • Climb 4,098 metres to the summit of Mount Kinabalu
  • Celebrate your achievements with three days of relaxation at Pantai Dalit Beach

This unique tour of Borneo is an excellent choice for those after adventure travel: a truly incredible experience.

As with all of our suggested itineraries, we can tailor-make your holiday to suit your budget, style, and expectations. Find out about our exclusive ‘Journey Planner’ here.

DAY 1  depart the UK

Depart the UK on your overnight flight to Kuching.

DayS 2-4  KUCHING

Your driver will meet you in Kuching for the transfer to your hotel. Time to recover from jetlag and relax in comfortable surroundings.

During your first full day in Kuching, you’ll take a half-day guided walking tour where you’ll learn about the city's recent history and sample some of the delicious and varied local food. Stops will include the charming Sarawak Museum, the Mughal-style pink State mosque and later in the day, there is a chance to take a sunset cruise along the Sarawak River.

The following day visit Bako National Park - a pristine rainforest just an hour out of the city where, with your guide, you’ll find wildlife, diverse plant life, jungle streams, waterfalls, deserted beaches, peculiar rock formations and a network of hiking trails. Alternatively, if you'd prefer a more sedate day in preparation for the forthcoming outdoor adventures, your travel expert could tailor your day to include a mix of free time and a tour of the Kuching Wetlands or a short trip to Semenggoh Orangutan Sanctuary.

DAy 5  MULU National park  - lang cave and deer cave

After breakfast, its a short hop by flight up to Mulu. During the first day, there will be time to take the 3km elevated plank-walk to Lang Cave - the most extensive cave passage in the world. Explore the impressive stalactites and stalagmites before proceeding to Deer Cave; at dusk witness, a fantastic spectacle as thousands of bats emerge from the cave in formation.

In the evening take a night trek back to the park headquarters as the jungle comes alive.

dAY 6  MULU NATIONAL PARK - WIND CAVE, CLEARWATER CAVE AND TREK TO CAMP 5

After breakfast,  take a 20-minute long boat ride up the Melanau River to the ‘must-see’ limestone caves: Wind Cave and Clearwater Cave. These form part of the largest connected cave system in the world

Enjoy a refreshing swim and local lunch before continuing by longboat to the start point for your 9km trek through the forest to Camp 5.

DAY 7  MULU NATIONAL PARK - THE PINNACLES

Today, after an early breakfast you'll commence the 2.4km ascent of Mt Api to an elevation of 1200m to view the Pinnacles. It is a tricky climb and not for everyone as you use a series of ropes and ladders over sharp limestone – definitely not for the faint-hearted so do speak to your travel expert if you feel this may not be for you. You'll take a picnic lunch at the viewpoint before you begin the descent back to Camp 5.

Day 8  MULU NATIONAL PARK - THE HEADHUNTERS TRAIL

Today you take the 11.5km Headhunters' trek following the route taken by the Kayan headhunting parties as they launched raids on the Limbang people. The route is adventurous and includes water crossings and lowland forest treks and a longboat journey (3 hours) on the Terikan and Medalam rivers. Late afternoon you'll reach the Iban longhouse where you'll pitch up for a pleasant overnight stay.  Meet the Iban families, enjoy a traditional dance performance, and eat and commune with the local people.

DAYS 9-10  KOTA KINABALU AND THE NATIONAL PARK

Today you leave this region on a one-hour flight from Limbang to Kota Kinabalu, check into a quality city hotel and take as much time as you like to rest and relax between your Mulu adventure and your Mount Kinabalu Climb.  A half day guided tour of the city can be included if you wish.

DAYS 11-12  CLIMB MOUNT KINABALU

Over the next two days, you will climb more than 4,000 metres above sea level to reach the summit of Mount Kinabalu, assisted by a park ranger - an incredible adventure. Pass by oak forests, moss-covered trees, bamboo, and ferns as you go, and there are plenty of rest stops and a picnic lunch.

On the first day you'll stop overnight in the national park and on the second night you'll stay at Laban Rata Resthouse, by which point you will have already ascended 3,353 metres. The next morning you'll be called early at 2 am to begin the final trek from Laban Rata to the summit in time for sunrise.

The descent takes you back past Laban Rata, and you’ll get a certificate for reaching the summit. You'll reach the base in the late afternoon and then transfer to your beach hotel for a well-earned rest!

DAYS 13-15  RELAX AT PANTAI DALIT BEACH

Pantai Dalit Beach is a secluded stretch of sand north of Kota Kinabalu, perfect for relaxation or water sports. Spend three days relaxing, enjoying beach life and reflecting on your amazing adventure in Borneo. If you have more time to spare, then your beach stay can be extended.

DAY 16  departure FROM KOTA KINABALU

Transfer to Kota Kinabalu Airport for your flight home.
