Amangalla is a characterful and seriously sophisticated hotel inside the UNESCO-listed Galle Fort.
Formerly the New Oriental Hotel, the property has a long and illustrious history. Aman has taken this beautiful building and renovated it with painstaking attention to detail. All the modern trimmings and comforts are there, but so too is the feeling of history and character from a property that has witnessed so many seminal times in this fascinating corner of the island.
Combining high-end luxury with authentic old world charm in a spectacular location, it can be considered one of the finest properties in Sri Lanka. Ideal for marking a special occassion.
The hotel has everything you would expect of a contemporary Aman resort and some surprising extras.
The Zaal (Great Hall) is the entry point to the resort and has a colonial feel with high ceilings, overhead fans and chandeliers and beautifully sets the overall tone of the property. The in-house spa offers a range of exotic treatments in serene surroundings. Fine dining and cocktails are available and the library is one of the most extensive we’ve come across.
A large swimming pool, surrounded by palms, is centred within the resorts established gardens; a cool respite from exploring, the pool courtyard has several wooden sun loungers and five serene and shaded rest pavilions. (You can also enjoy complimentary breakfast and afternoon tea from the months of May to December.)
Our favourite spot is the Sunset Balcony, where you can sip an evening drink while looking out across the rooftops of Galle and the Indian Ocean beyond.
The Rooms
Amangalla has 29 rooms and suites, arranged as Bedrooms, Chambers, Suites and Garden House rooms.
Each reflects the building’s colonial heritage, with polished teak floorboards, high ceilings and antique-style furnishings.
Large windows bring in plenty of natural light, while spacious bathrooms and modern comforts ensure the stay remains comfortable without distracting from the building’s character.
The Garden House suites sit within the hotel’s tranquil gardens and offer additional privacy. Throughout, the style is elegant and restrained, allowing the history of the property to take centre stage.
