The Merchant
Galle Fort,
Heritage building
Couples
Families
A characterful boutique stay in a 17th-century building, right in the cobbled heart of Galle Fort.
The Merchant sits on Pedlar Street, one of the liveliest lanes inside Galle’s historic walls, surrounded by cafes and beautifully restored colonial buildings. It’s an ideal base for exploring the fort on foot.
Inside, modern comforts sit alongside traditional décor and a touch of old-fashioned panache.
Ideal for couples and culture lovers who want to stay inside Galle Fort’s historic walls, with cafes, galleries and the ramparts right on the doorstep. The hotel’s restaurant, 1710, is a real highlight, with a lovely atmosphere and excellent food.
Step outside and you’re surrounded by Galle’s layered history, with mosques, churches, museums and grand old mansions all within a few minutes’ walk. As evening falls, wander up to the ramparts to watch the sun set over the ocean.
All in all, this is a charming, well-placed stay for anyone keen to soak up life inside the fort.
The Rooms
There are 14 rooms, all styled in a similar way.
Most look out over Pedlar Street and have a small balcony, perfect for watching the world go by.
They’re all comfortable and full of character. We’d recommend going for the Super Deluxe or Premium, just based on the extra space.
