Kumana National Park

Kumana National Park is a natural gem on the southeastern coast of Sri Lanka, around an hour’s drive from Arugam Bay. The location of the park means that it goes under the radar of many tourists, but it’s a real hidden gem with a rich and diverse array of plants, animals, and birds to discover. 

The park’s terrain is predominantly made up of vast mangrove forests which create a perfect ecosystem for over 200 species of birds, including rare and endangered varieties. The sanctuary is particularly known for its large flocks of migratory waterfowl, open-bills, spoonbills, and black-necked storks.  

Apart from its feathered inhabitants, Kumana National Park is also home to a diverse range of animal life, and sightings of elephants, sloth bears, and leopards are not uncommon. Plenty of other animals can be seen in the park, from monkeys to crocodiles to turtles, and your experienced guide will help you spot them as you meander through the dense foliage.
