Kalukanda House
Family,
Friends,
Couples
This gorgeous villa offers a peaceful escape in a sun-dappled setting, just a short stroll from the beach.
Lovingly built in 2017 by British-Sri Lankan interior designer Dee Gibson — a great friend of ETG — this Walauwa-style villa blends colonial character with design-led, modern touches.
It’s bright and airy, beautifully furnished with antiques, and has a large, inviting pool and a serene yoga shala, all set within tropical gardens scented with frangipani.
Kalukanda House is a great fit for families, groups of friends, or even couples (you can book individual rooms).
Whether you’re here to sink into your blissful surroundings or head off on local adventures, the excellent staff at Kalukanda are always on hand to take care of you.
You can spend your days by the pool, stretching out in the yoga shala, or hanging out in the big open living space. If you’re up for surfing, Jungle Beach is just down the road — a lovely spot to have a cold Lion beer and a freshly made Roti at sunset. A tuk-tuk is always available throughout your stay if you want to explore Weligama or head to Galle for the day.
Meals are usually served in the shady veranda and there’s a well-equipped kitchen if you want to cook yourself, though the staff will happily whip up traditional curries for your lunches and dinners. If you’re into food, join the chef on a trip to the local market and learn how to make a few Sri Lankan classics.
The Rooms
The house sleeps up to eight guests across four en-suite bedrooms, three doubles and one twin.
Each comes with a lovely four-poster bed, and some come with Juliette balconies overlooking the garden.
